Stocking Stuffers for Troops

September 29th, 2009

Care packages from home are an important part of keep the morale up for our troops overseas. Care packages let them know that the people back home love them, care for them, and are thinking of them. Christmas time should be no exception — in fact, it’s even more important at Christmas time, because troops are even more lonely being away from their families for the holiday. That’s where one Illinois non-profit organization steps in. Operation Support Our Troops Illinois is currently collecting stocking stuffer items for members of the military who will be overseas at Christmas time. Items like beef jerky, puzzle books, CDs and DVDs, batteries, candy, and small toys can really help to brighten their days. I think this is a great idea, and hope that more organizations like OSOT exist throughout the country to take care of all of our troops during the holiday season.

Toy Stocking Stuffers

September 21st, 2009

When it comes time to stuff the stockings, small toys are one of the best stocking stuffers for kids. You can buy small toys in any price range, from $1 or cheaper up to $20 or even more-it all depends on your budget.

If you don’t have a lot to spend, check out stores like Dollar Tree, Everything’s $1, or Deals. They have hundreds of small toys and trinkets for $1 that your kids might get a kick out of.

One great gift idea in the lower price range is a card game or a travel-sized board game. You can usually find these for around $5 or less, and they can provide hours of fun. Be sure to consider the age of the child you’re buying it for, as well as the others who might be playing the game, when you’re selecting what to buy. For a younger child, a simple game like Guess Who or Candy Land might be a good choice, while older children would be more likely to enjoy a word game like Scrabble.

Small stuffed animals make another great stocking stuffer, especially for small children. Kids who are a little older might enjoy Webkinz, which can usually be gotten on sale for around $8-10 each and give your kids to access to dozens of online games and educational activities in a safe environment.

What are some of your own favorite “toy” stocking stuffers? What have your kids enjoyed in the past?

Stocking Stuffers for Techies

September 12th, 2009

Filling a Christmas stocking for the technology geek can be a tall order, or an expensive one to say the least. Frugal Stocking Stuffers

September 10th, 2009

This year, we’re all a little more focused on being frugal when it comes to everything in our lives, and Christmas is likely no exception.  The Frugal Yankee has some great ideas for keeping your stocking costs low while still giving gifts that will be appreciated. You just have to think creatively.

Their first suggestion is to cut down on the number of stockings you have to put together. Instead of one person taking on the responsibility of filling everyone’s stocking, why not draw names, and each person will fill one person’s stocking?  When it’s time to do the shopping, don’t try to do all of it in one day. Keep an eye out for little trinkets you can put in the stocking each time you go out shopping. You can also wrap each item before you put it in the stocking, which makes it take up more space and also adds mystery. Lastly, think “practical” when you’re choosing items for the stocking.

Based on their suggestions, here are some ideas:

- Foods like oranges, apples, or candy
- Toothbrushes
- Seed packets for the gardeners in the family
- Small toiletry items (lotions, nail polish, etc.)
- Small bags of popcorn or other snacks
- Office supplies
- Books
- Small clothing items such as hats, gloves, or socks

What are your own frugal stocking stuffer ideas? Will you be changing the way you typically fill stockings this year?
